Killehenny graveyard is located on Sandhill road, near the entrance to Ballybunion’s old golf course. The town of Ballybunion is actually situated in the medieval parish of Killehenny, (or Cill Eithne), which translates as the ‘Church of St. Eithne’.
The site was first established by a holy woman called Eithne way back in the early christian times. It is said she was a gentle person who loved and cared for the people when food was in short supply. Eithne’s feast day in Ballybunion was traditionally on July 12th, but is no longer celebrated in the town.
